An unprompted citation is a brand mention that appears in an AI-generated response without the user specifically asking about the brand — occurring because the AI system determined the brand was relevant and worth referencing based on the query topic alone. Unprompted citations are the highest-value AI search outcome. They indicate that the brand has earned a position in the AI’s understanding of its category — not just as a known entity when named, but as a recommended or referenced entity when a topic is queried. Building unprompted citation frequency is the goal of AI search optimization: the brand becomes part of the AI’s default answer to category questions, not just a correct answer when specifically asked about.
