An unprompted citation is a brand mention that appears in an AI-generated response without the user specifically asking about the brand — occurring because the AI system determined the brand was relevant and worth referencing based on the query topic alone.
Why It Matters for AI Search
Unprompted citations are the highest-value AI search outcome. They indicate that the brand has earned a position in the AI’s understanding of its category — not just as a known entity when named, but as a recommended or referenced entity when a topic is queried.
