Definition

The Model Context Protocol is an open standard for connecting AI models to external tools and data sources through a consistent interface. It lets an assistant call out to systems, retrieve live information, and take actions, rather than relying only on what it learned in training. It gives agents a common way to reach the world outside their weights. The protocol is part of how AI assistants move from answering out of memory to acting on current, external data. As agents adopt it, the systems a model can reach become sources it pulls from in real time, which extends the surface where a business needs to be legible from web pages to structured, connected data. It signals the direction of AI search: models that fetch and act, not only recall, and businesses whose information is available in the forms those models can consume.
