Definition

A head term is a short, high-volume, broad keyword that typically has high competition and lower conversion intent compared to long-tail queries. Head terms are usually one to two words and represent the broadest formulation of a topic. Head terms are less relevant as direct optimization targets in AI search than in traditional SEO. AI systems respond to conversational, specific queries — not isolated head terms. However, head terms define the topic domains that brands should establish topical authority in. A brand with strong AI citation authority for head term topics earns broader retrieval across the full range of long-tail queries in that domain.
