Definition

Content gap analysis is the process of identifying topics, subtopics, or query types that competitors cover but a given brand does not — used to expand topical coverage and authority by systematically filling the gaps between current content and comprehensive domain coverage. Content gap analysis applied to AI search is more specific than traditional SEO gap analysis. Instead of asking “what keywords do competitors rank for that we don’t,” AI search gap analysis asks “what queries do AI systems answer using competitors’ content that they can’t answer using ours?” This requires combining topical gap analysis with citation gap analysis — identifying not just missing topics but missing citation opportunities — to prioritize content investment for maximum AI search impact.
