Competitive displacement in AI search occurs when a competitor’s content, entity signals, or retrieval presence causes an AI system to cite the competitor in response to queries where the brand should plausibly appear — actively displacing the brand from citation opportunities it would otherwise capture. Competitive displacement is the active threat version of a citation gap. It is not just that the brand is absent — it is that a specific competitor is present instead. Identifying competitive displacement requires mapping which competitors appear in queries where the brand does not, understanding why their content or entity signals are stronger, and building the targeted optimization that closes the gap. Competitive displacement analysis turns abstract competitive concern into specific, actionable content and entity priorities.
