Measurement · Citation & Visibility Measurement

Definition

Citation velocity is the rate at which a brand’s AI citation presence is growing or declining — measured by changes in citation rate, citation breadth, and citation frequency over a defined time period. Positive citation velocity indicates an expanding AI footprint; negative velocity indicates decay. Citation velocity gives directional context to citation rate data. A brand with a 20% citation rate that was 10% six months ago has strong positive velocity — its optimization efforts are working. A brand with a 20% citation rate that was 30% six months ago has negative velocity — something is eroding its position. Tracking velocity alongside rate distinguishes between brands that are building AI presence and brands that are defending against decay.
